Not many people know this, but when I booked my First TV Credit on Scandal, I learned a BIG LESSON: WATCH MORE TV.
I was on a van headed to set to shoot my scene and we stopped to pick someone up….VIOLA DAVIS. I was confused because I knew she wasn’t a character on Scandal. I whispered to a P.A. “what’s happening? that’s Viola Davis”. He said “Yeah, this is the crossover episode with How to Get Away with Murder. Didn’t you see the part where they will “introduce Annalise Keating”? I lied and said “oh yeah.” I had NO IDEA who Annalise Keating was. I had never seen an episode of How to Get Away with Murder…or Scandal for that matter…the show I was there to film.
STEP 1: Forget re-watching you old faves. You want to watch TV or BE ON TV? Watch an episode of every show you can (whether you like them or not), especially the successful ones. You don’t need to be a fan of them, but you want to be able to say “oh that’s that show about…”.
STEP 2: Pay attention to the NON-Series regulars who sneak in with a quick Co-Star role. Barista? Delivery Guy? Bartender? We go in depth in the branding part of the ROAD TO SERIES REGULAR class. When you see a show you can REALISTICALLY be a part of, research everything about it (studio, producers, directors, writers, casting) & take notes. NOT A SHOW YOU WANT TO BE A SERIES REGULAR ON (those roles have been cast). With this info, you’re programming your brain to find opportunities for you without you trying (that’s the start of how I booked “All-American” & got a callback for “Coming 2 America”). Next time you see those names, your brain will lock in.
These 2 simple steps will start moving you towards BOOKING YOUR FIRST TELEVISION CREDIT, getting an agent or manager (even with no credits), and building MOMENTUM.
